NMG Uganda resumes operations after month-long shutdown

Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda has announced the resumption of normal operations, a month after the country’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and President Yoweri Museveni’s son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba shut them down.

In a statement on Tuesday, July 28, NMG PLC Chairman Joe Muganda explained that the media house would progressively restore services across television, print, radio and digital.

He added that the station's focus remains on delivering trusted and balanced content across all platforms. 

"We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by our audiences, clients and partners during this period and appreciate your continued trust and confidence in our brands," the statement read in part. 

"As we return to serving you, our focus remains the delivery of trusted and balanced journalism across all our platforms."

On June 28, 2026, General Muhoozi initiated an overnight security crackdown at the station's Uganda offices in Namuwongo, Kampala, in an attempt to crack down on free press. 

This led to the shutdown of NTV Uganda, Spark TV and Daily Monitor. 

According to Muhoozi, the crackdown was prompted by "bad stories" targeting the nation's top leadership, following a series of hard-hitting news reports and television features focusing on Uganda’s political and security establishment.

"Mzee has approved my plan to close both NTV and Monitor. We are moving immediately!" Muhoozi posted on X. 

"From now on ALL bad stories about Uganda have to be cleared by my office!. In Uganda, I DO NOT believe in a free press! The press should be guided by cadres of the revolution."
