Deputy President William Ruto says the turn-out of the highly contested Nguu/Masumba Member of County Assembly by-elections in Makueni last month was a good sign for his party.

Speaking Saturday while addressing residents of Matutu village in Nguu/Masumba, Kibwezi West, Ruto said although the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate David Musau lost to independent candidate Timothy Maneno, it showed he had more influence on the region than Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

“I have come to say thank you. Although the seat was won by another person, not a UDA candidate, we defeated the Wiper man. The journey has begun, this region is made up of courageous people,” said Ruo.

He further said he believed the region would rally behind him in the upcoming 2022 general elections.

He further took jabs at Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, saying his March 218 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta was to blame for what he termed as confusion in the Jubilee administration and stalled development.

“He joined the government saying it was for peace but we have seen no peace at all since he came on board. The Big 4 Agenda that we had is now history,” said Ruto.

In the October 14 Nguu/Masumba by-election, Timothy Maneno, who ran as an independent candidate, won the seat after garnering 2,894 votes ahead of the William Ruto-led UDA candidate David Musau (2,223) and Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party aspirant Eisho Mwaiwa (1,601).

On their part, Wiper Party said it lost due to infiltrators. Wiper Nominated Senator Sylvia Kasanga blamed the loss on “moles” she claimed were paid to compromise the party, right from the nomination stage.

“Wiper was infiltrated from UDA, from Governor Mutua’s camp…they had all infiltrated. We had moles everywhere, people were paid, and it was very different even to hold a strategy,” Kasanga told Citizen TV.
