Nathan Kemboi sets sights on World Para javelin record in Dubai

Kenyan para-javelin star Nathan Kemboi is targeting a world record at the Dubai Para Athletics Grand Prix as he steps up preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.

The reigning African record holder is confident that his previous experience in Dubai will give him an advantage when the competition runs from January 30 to February 5, 2027.

“As for training, I am progressing well and am ready for the competition. The advantage is that I have been to Dubai twice before, so I am familiar with the climate and the food; there is nothing new there that I would need to adjust to. Right now, I am preparing thoroughly to avoid any of the challenges I faced previously,” said Kemboi.

The Eldama Ravine-born athlete set a new African record in the men’s F46 javelin on February 10, 2026, throwing 54.11 metres to win silver at the Dubai World Para Athletics Grand Prix in the United Arab Emirates.

The performance marked a major milestone in Kemboi’s career and further raised Kenya’s profile in international para-athletics.

“After clinching the African record, the goal now is to set a world record—without losing sight of the most important objective: qualifying for the LA 2028 Olympics. Qualifying early will help us prepare effectively and iron out any potential errors.”

Kemboi, who also won silver at the 2024 Marrakech World Para Athletics Grand Prix with a throw of 49.14 metres, says he is encouraged by the growing number of athletes taking up javelin.

He believes the increased participation is a positive sign for the development of para-athletics in Kenya.

“I have seen several athletes stepping forward to take part in this javelin-throwing sport, and that shows we are heading in the right direction as a nation and as athletes who are differently abled.”
