Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital has ruled out Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in a female patient who was admitted after exhibiting symptoms associated with the deadly viral infection.

In a statement dated Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the hospital confirmed that laboratory tests conducted at the National Virology Reference Laboratory returned negative results for Ebola.

The patient was admitted to the hospital's Emergency Department at 5am on Monday, October 12, after experiencing general body weakness, fever and an intermittent dry cough for three weeks.

According to the hospital, her condition had deteriorated in the 24 hours preceding admission, during which she developed breathing difficulties and bleeding from body openings and puncture sites.

However, the patient reported no recent travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or Uganda, or contact with individuals exhibiting similar symptoms.

"The patient was promptly assessed and management initiated for the presenting condition with EVD as a differential," the hospital said.

Following the assessment, healthcare workers activated infection prevention and control protocols in line with national guidelines for managing suspected Ebola cases.

Samples were subsequently collected and submitted to the National Virology Reference Laboratory for testing, which confirmed that the patient did not have Ebola.

"The results have since confirmed that the patient did not have Ebola Virus Disease," the hospital stated.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Sammy Kilonzo reassured hospital staff that all necessary precautionary measures had been implemented to protect healthcare workers while ensuring the patient received appropriate medical attention.

The hospital also commended its healthcare workers, support staff, the Laikipia County Department of Health and other stakeholders for their response to the suspected case.

Management urged staff to remain vigilant and rely on official communication from the hospital and relevant health authorities regarding public health concerns.

The hospital did not disclose the patient's final diagnosis or provide further details about her condition following the negative Ebola test.
