Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang on Tuesday suspended 16 county officials among them three county executive committee members over allegations of graft and theft of county property.

This came after investigations reportedly revealed that a consignment of 99 tyres valued at Ksh.3.4 million meant for county vehicles as well as material for construction of Early Childhood Development Education facilities had been stolen.

“The investigations are ongoing and the police have since arrested some county staff, some of whom have been arraigned in court,” said Governor Sang.

The suspended CECs are Eng. Hillary Koech in charge of Roads, Valentine Chumo (Education) and Stanley Baliach (Lands and atural resources).

The governor said further investigations are ongoing and those culpable will be prosecuted.

“Alongside the ongoing legal process, I am taking an administrative action to deal with this matter. I have constituted ad hoc audit committee to investigate the whole matter, identify the existing loopholes in the management and implementation processes of ECDE projects,” said Sang.

The committee has been given 30 days to conclude its probe and file back a report that will also include recommendations on measures to be undertaken to prevent the same from happening in future.
