Nairobi United new boy Awiko purring ahead of new season

The 23-year-old, who was among the league's standout defenders last season, believes the club can challenge for major honors following a debut season in which they finished an impressive fourth.

Speaking after completing the move, Awiko said Nairobi United's ambition and growing stature in Kenyan football made the decision an easy one.

"I have signed for a big team. It's a team that has even played in CAF so I hope they have that experience of playing big games abroad," he said.

The defender added that he believes the club offers him the ideal environment to continue developing his career.

"Personally, I signed for Nairobi United because Nairobi United is a good team and this is where I see my football future prospering and taking me far."

Having enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, Awiko is now determined to translate his individual success into team achievements.

"This season, my achievement with this team is to win the league, win the FKF Cup and as a defender, for my backline to keep many clean sheets and beat other teams," he said.

While his primary focus is helping the team compete for trophies, the center-back admitted he also wants to improve on his personal achievements after being recognized among the league's best defenders.

"Being among the best defenders of the season feels really great as a defender. This season, I'm aiming higher, to be the absolute best defender of the season."

Awiko began his senior career at Migori Youth before featuring for Nairobi City Stars and later Shabana FC, where he developed into one of the most consistent defenders in the FKF Premier League.

His composure on the ball, aerial dominance and ability to contribute goals have made him one of the most exciting defensive talents in Kenyan football.

The youngster becomes one of several new arrivals as the club strengthens its squad ahead of a demanding domestic and continental campaign.

"To the Nairobi United fans, I can tell you this season, I just ask that you turn out in large numbers because we are ready to achieve many things. We will lift trophies so just be ready to celebrate."
