Kenya has stepped up preparations for the inaugural World Rugby 7s Division 2 Tourney to be held on the Valentine’s weekend following confirmation of strong government backing and growing excitement ahead of the global rugby event at Nyayo Stadium.

Speaking during a media briefing in Nairobi, Kenya Rugby Union Chairperson Harriet Okach described the tournament as a landmark moment for the country's sporting history and for local supporters eager to witness elite competition at home.

Kenya becomes the second African nation to host a rugby event of this magnitude after South Africa.

“This week marks a very historic moment because for the first time Kenya is hosting a rugby event on home soil,” Okach said.

The KRU boss also applauded the Ministry of Sports for its coordination and commitment, noting that collaboration between government agencies and the federation has strengthened planning, logistics and overall readiness for the tournament.

The Principal Secretary for Sports confirmed that the government approved a major sponsorship package after Kenya Rugby Union submitted a formal funding request to support the event's delivery.

“The Kenya Rugby Union submitted a request for funding and we have approved a one hundred million Kenya shillings package for them," the PS said, adding that the investment demonstrates national commitment to hosting successful international competitions.

Demand for the tournament has been overwhelming, with organisers confirming that tickets are completely sold out ahead of kick off.

A full house is now expected at Nyayo National Stadium, guaranteeing an electric atmosphere as Kenyan fans turn up in large numbers to witness the country’s historic moment on the global rugby stage and rally behind the teams throughout the two-day competition.

Meanwhile, motorists in Nairobi have been alerted to temporary road closures and traffic diversions from Friday night.

According to the Nairobi Traffic Base, Aerodrome Road will be totally closed, whereas Mombasa and Lang’ata Road will be partially shut down.

Shujaa will battle for the top honours against the USA, Uruguay, Germany, Belgium, Canada.

On the other hand, the home girls, Kenya Lionesses, will face South Africa, Brazil, China, Spain and Argentina.
