The Nairobi branch of the Kenya African National Union (KANU)
has reaffirmed its support for the growing political engagement between party
Chairman Gideon Moi and President William Ruto, describing the alliance as a
strategic move aimed at securing the party’s relevance in the country’s
evolving political landscape.
Speaking to the media at Kabarnet Gardens on Friday, Nairobi KANU Branch
Chairperson Titus Otieno said the branch
fully supported the ongoing engagement between the two leaders, which he noted
was strengthened following President Ruto’s visits to Kabarak after Moi
withdrew from the 2025 Baringo Senatorial by-election race.
“We are solidly behind the
engagement between our Party Chairman Gideon Moi and President William Ruto,
which was further cemented through the President’s visits to Kabarak after our
Chairman graciously stepped aside in the Baringo Senatorial race,” said Otieno.
Otieno said backing President
Ruto’s re-election bid presents KANU with what he termed the most practical
political pathway within the current political arrangement, adding that the
party was keen on strengthening its internal structures ahead of the 2027
General Election.
The Nairobi branch also announced
preparations for the party’s upcoming grassroots elections, which are expected
to be conducted in phases across branches nationwide as part of efforts to
revamp KANU’s structures and usher in new leadership.
“The Nairobi branch is fully
prepared for the grassroots elections that will be conducted in phases to bring
fresh blood into the party and make it even more vibrant and responsive to the
aspirations of Kenyans,” Otieno said.
He added that the branch had
already begun identifying and recruiting aspirants who will vie for various
elective seats across Nairobi in the next General Election.
“We want to assure Kenyans that
as KANU Nairobi branch, we are actively scouting for aspirants and will field
candidates across all wards and constituencies in Nairobi. Our objective is to
re-establish KANU as a formidable political force in the capital and across the
country,” he said.
The remarks come amid a thawing of relations between Moi and
President Ruto following Moi’s decision to withdraw from the Baringo senatorial
by-election in support of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Vincent Chemitei, who went on to win the seat.
