Nairobi Expressway's Westlands entrance to be closed for two days

In a notice, Moja Expressway Company said the temporary diversion will take effect from 8.00 pm on Saturday, September 19 and run until noon on Monday, September 21.

During the works, CBD-bound motorists will not be allowed to use the elevated overpass deck to access the Westlands entrance and will instead be required to use the lower A8 road.

The company said outbound traffic exiting the Nairobi Expressway towards the overpass will resume normal operations from Saturday at 5.00 pm. 

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and follow directions from traffic marshals stationed along the affected route.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for choosing the Nairobi Expressway," the notice read in part. 

The diversion comes as traffic volumes on the Nairobi Expressway continue to grow, with official government data showing the Nairobi Expressway averaged 67,298 vehicles daily in the 2024/25 financial year, up from about 59,000 vehicles two years earlier and 11,000 when operations began.

During the first half of the 2024/25 financial year, about 12.5 million vehicles used the expressway, highlighting the increasing reliance on the route by motorists travelling across Nairobi.
