Nairobi City County is offering free cancer screening to residents throughout October as part of efforts to promote early detection and improve access to specialised cancer care.

The month-long campaign, running until October 31, is being conducted at the Nairobi County Cancer Centre located along Swaminarayan Road in Parklands, with residents encouraged to seek screening and professional medical advice.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Fredrick Obwanda said the establishment of the centre marked a significant milestone in expanding access to specialised cancer services within the public healthcare system.

“The establishment of the Nairobi County Cancer Centre is a major milestone in our efforts to bring specialised cancer services closer to the people. We want residents to access screening, diagnosis and appropriate care within a public healthcare system without unnecessary barriers,” Obwanda said.

He noted that the high cost of cancer diagnosis and treatment remains a major challenge for many families, making accessible screening services essential in encouraging people to seek medical attention before the disease advances.

Obwanda urged Nairobi residents to take advantage of the free screening campaign, saying early detection could make a significant difference in cancer management and treatment outcomes.

“We encourage all Nairobi residents to take advantage of this opportunity and make screening part of their regular health routine. Early detection can make a significant difference in the management of cancer, and our goal is to ensure that more people come forward for screening and receive professional medical advice,” he said.

The initiative seeks to reduce financial barriers that prevent residents from accessing preventive healthcare services, while encouraging regular medical check-ups and timely diagnosis.

Health experts have consistently emphasised the importance of detecting cancer at an early stage, when treatment options may be more effective. Delayed diagnosis, on the other hand, can result in more complex treatment needs and increased financial and emotional strain on patients and their families.

The Nairobi County Cancer Centre is part of the county's efforts to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure by bringing specialised services closer to residents who may otherwise struggle to afford or access them.

Residents have been encouraged to visit the centre at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital during the campaign period to access screening and guidance from healthcare professionals.

The free screening programme will run until October 31, 2026
