Revealed: Nairobi County spent Ksh.0 on development in four months

Controller of Budget (CoB) Margaret Nyakang'o has shone the spotlight on counties and how they allocated and spent their development monies.

Nyakang’o, in the report covering the start of the financial year from July to October, revealed that the Governor Johnson Sakaja-led Nairobi County is among 10 devolved units that spent zero shillings on development during the period.

The others include Kajiado, Baringo, Lamu, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot counties.

On the other hand, the report indicated that Governors Patrick Ole Ntutu of Narok and Kirinyaga's Anne Waiguru spent the highest on development.

Ntutu pumped Ksh.477 million to development in four months, while Waiguru spent Ksh.378 million, with Busia's Paul Otuoma absorbing Ksh.328 million to development.

The CoB report further showed that the pending bills headache has refused to go away. Nairobi County has Ksh.121 billion worth of pending bills, while Garissa owes Ksh.6 billion to service providers.

Kiambu owes Ksh.5.9 billion and Turkana has a total pending bill of Ksh.4.8 billion.

The Controller of Budget went ahead to tell Governors to allocate funds to payment of pending bills as their first charge as recommended by the Senate.
