Nairobi is set for a major transformation following the signing of a landmark agreement to establish a modern arena and entertainment district in the Railway area, with completion targeted in under 12 months.

The multi-million-shilling project is expected to reshape the city’s cultural, sporting, and economic landscape, positioning Kenya’s capital as a premier destination for global events, sports, and entertainment.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja described the development as a long-overdue breakthrough, noting that similar plans had stalled under previous administrations.

“This is a dream come true. The discussions have been ongoing for years, across two administrations, but it has never been done. Now it is finally happening,” he said.

Sakaja said the arena would reflect Nairobi’s distinct identity, offering a world-class venue for the city’s “vibe, sound and spirit.” The facility is expected to host a wide range of events, including concerts, conferences, and basketball matches, while positioning sports and entertainment as key drivers of economic growth.

“This arena will bring in events and opportunities. It is not just about entertainment; it is business. It will create jobs, grow our economy, and open doors for our youth to express themselves and earn a living,” he added.

He highlighted Nairobi’s strategic global connectivity, within reach of major cities such as London and Amsterdam, as a competitive advantage in attracting international events and investors.

The governor also expressed confidence that the facility would elevate Nairobi’s status as a regional basketball hub, drawing talent and fans from across Africa.

“This will turn Nairobi into the heart of basketball in Africa. Young people from across the region will look to the city as a centre of opportunity,” he said.

Sakaja credited President William Ruto for fast-tracking the project, praising his administration’s focus on implementation and delivery.

“Mr President, you have made it happen. Others began the conversation, but you have delivered. This is about less talk and more action. On behalf of Nairobi, we are proud and grateful. This project will change our city,” he said.

Once complete, the arena is expected to anchor a vibrant entertainment district, unlock new investment opportunities, and further cement Nairobi’s position as a leading urban and cultural hub in Africa.
