The Nairobi County Government has ramped up the construction of pedestrian walkways across the Central Business District (CBD) as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance safety, mobility, and aesthetics in the city centre.

Led by Nairobi Mobility Chief Officer Dr. Machel Waikenda, county officials recently conducted an inspection tour of both completed and ongoing walkway projects. Dr. Waikenda reiterated the administration’s commitment to improving the pedestrian experience through expanded sidewalks and upgraded street infrastructure.

“Governor Sakaja’s administration is determined to restore order and ease mobility within the city,” said Dr. Waikenda. “This initiative allows residents to walk freely without interference from traffic, while also improving the city’s overall appearance and functionality.”

Among the newly completed projects is the Moi Avenue Service Lane near the Ambassadors area, where modern cabro paving has been installed. The transformation has significantly enhanced the organization and visual appeal of the area.

Ongoing works include sections along Haile Selassie Avenue and Taifa Lane, with more locations already earmarked for upgrades.

“We have a comprehensive plan to upgrade all major walkways within the CBD,” Dr. Waikenda added. “In addition to improving safety and movement, the project is creating job opportunities for our youth, who are actively working alongside county engineers.”

The walkway installations form a central part of Governor Sakaja’s broader urban renewal strategy, which also encompasses road rehabilitation, traffic decongestion, and improved public infrastructure throughout Nairobi County.

As the CBD continues to undergo its transformation, residents can look forward to a safer, more walkable, and better-organized city environment.
