Nairobi Boys became the first ever winners of the Gusii Sevens rugby tournament after outclassing Fullback Tigers 29-12 in Sunday’s final.

Boys won KSh300,000 in prize money for their triumph with Collins Shikalo capping their success at the inaugural event when he was crowned the top try scorer.

First runners up Fullback Tigers who are also based in Nairobi had a fine run until the final when they lost to Boys, proving second best in the inaugural Gusii Sevens Easter Bonanza.

Tigers take home a cash prize award of kshs 200,00 as hosts and third place winners Kisii RFC settle for kshs 100,000.

Kisii RFC’s Alvin Marube finished the tournament a class above the rest, being named Kisii Sevens 2019 Most Valuable Player, taking home a 32 inch television set and a gift hamper.

On the other hand, Shikalo walked away with a 42 inch television set and a gift hamper for his try scoring exploits.

The second day of the much hyped tourney had a number of setbacks, kick off being delayed until 4PM as referees protested for pay.

The rains also did little to help the situation as they almost vandalized everything including the public address system.

The award ceremony was conducted at exactly 7:30PM, with the aid of security lights and spotlights as organizer Antony Kibagendi believed the tournament was a success regardless of murmurs from some quarters of sidelining the locals.
