The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) seized over 5,000 litres of illicit alcohol and confiscated narcotics during a major multi-agency crackdown in Narok County.

The two-day operation, conducted on May 22 and 23, 2025, focused on notorious hotspots in Topoti/Emorogi and Naikara markets, located in Narok North and Narok West sub-counties.

The crackdown was spearheaded by NACADA Head of Enforcement, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nicholas Kosgey, and involved officers from the National Government Administration Officer (NGAO) and the National Police Service (NPS).

In Topoti/Emorogi, enforcement officers raided several suspected brewing sites, destroying more than 5,000 litres of Kangara, a potent illegal brew. The operation also led to the recovery of 5 kilograms of bhang. However, no arrests were made as suspects fled the scene upon detecting the approaching officers.

At Naikara Market, the team carried out compliance checks on alcohol-selling outlets, destroying 60 litres of Busaa, another form of illicit brew. Intelligence gathered during the operation indicated that the area is a hub for counterfeit products and uncustomed goods, likely smuggled across the border from Tanzania.

The findings have prompted calls for a broader, more coordinated crackdown involving additional agencies.

Despite the absence of arrests, the operation has had a significant impact, sending a stern warning to those engaged in the illegal alcohol and drug trade. Local residents have lauded the crackdown, expressing support for the authorities and a commitment to help rid the community of illicit substances.

“The public has been supportive and is willing to assist in future operations,” said SSP Kosgey. “This is just the beginning—more crackdowns will follow.”

Authorities have pledged to intensify efforts in the region, warning that individuals involved in the illicit trade will face the full force of the law as the fight against drug and alcohol abuse continues.
