The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has strengthened its enforcement efforts following the graduation of officers from a specialised Detection Canine Handling Course at the K9 Unit in Lang’ata, Nairobi.

The training equips the officers with the skills needed to work with detection dogs, enhancing NACADA’s capacity to identify and intercept illicit drugs. These officers will now be part of a dedicated K9 unit aimed at supporting national efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks.

NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa highlighted the importance of the initiative, calling it a strategic investment in the country’s ongoing fight against drug abuse.

“A well-trained K9 team enhances our ability to detect and intercept illegal substances before they reach our communities,” said Dr. Omerikwa. “This effort is a critical part of our broader strategy to strengthen enforcement capabilities.”

The deployment of the K9 unit comes under the framework of the 100-Day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI), spearheaded by the Ministry of Interior, which aims to accelerate action against drug and substance abuse across the country.

Dr. Omerikwa noted that as traffickers evolve their tactics, enforcement agencies must also adapt through innovation and continuous training.

The graduation marks a significant step in NACADA’s efforts to build specialised capabilities, particularly in frontline detection and response, amid growing concerns over drug trafficking and substance abuse in Kenya.
