Mwangaza backs Sifuna for 2027, recalls impeachment battle

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has thrown her weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political ambitions, urging residents of Meru to support his bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the Linda Mwananchi movement’s tour of Meru on Saturday, Mwangaza revisited her 2024 impeachment, accusing political leaders of failing to uphold the Constitution and crediting some leaders for standing by her during the removal process.

“During my impeachment which was unjustified, sifuna including and other leaders who are here today like Boni khalwale and Richard Onyonka did not vote for my impeachment because they respect the constitution Kenya,” she recalled.

Mwangaza was impeached by the Meru County Assembly in August 2024 on allegations including gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office. She denied the allegations during her Senate hearing.

The August 2024 impeachment was the third time the County Assembly had successfully impeached Mwangaza, following two earlier attempts that did not result in her removal from office. The Senate subsequently upheld the third impeachment, resulting in her removal as Meru governor.

Mwangaza later challenged the Senate’s decision in court, arguing that the impeachment process was unfair. In March 2025, the High Court dismissed her petition and upheld the impeachment.

Despite the court finding, Mwangaza maintained her position on Saturday, arguing that the impeachment reflected a broader failure to respect constitutional principles.

“Today, people do not respect the constitution, that’s why I was removed from the office. These leaders here today stood with me,” she said.

She also urged Meru residents to rally behind Sifuna, who has increasingly positioned himself for a presidential run ahead of the 2027 elections. Sifuna has publicly signaled his intention to pursue the presidency, although his political vehicle remains a subject of ongoing political developments.

“Sifuna is not wealthy like the rest, it is us Kenyans who contribute  for his campaign, we want to go throughout the country with him,” she said.

As she seeks to mobilise support for Sifuna among Meru voters, Mwangaza’s endorsement adds another layer to the emerging political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, as the Linda Mwananchi movement seeking to build a nationwide political base.
