Outgoing Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr has been declared the county’s governor-elect.

Mutula Jr was contesting on a Wiper Party ticket and garnered 214,088 votes ahead of his closest rival, outgoing Kibwezi West MP Patrick Musimba, who scored 63,252 votes.

Musimba ran as an Independent candidate.

In a thank-you note on social media shortly after being awarded his certificate by IEBC on Saturday evening, Mutula Jr thanked Makueni voters for voting him in through what he called a unanimous vote.

I sincerely thank the people of Makueni  for their confidence and unanimous vote as their Second Governor. The 214,088 votes (73.95% of votes cast) is not a mean feat,” he said.

He added: “Wauni wa kwika nesa (Eagerness to do good).”

The race to succeed Governor Kivutha Kibwana had attracted five candidates; David Wambua of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party who got 8,378, Emmanuel Mutisya of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party (2,929), as well as Independent candidate Anderson Kaloki who got843 votes.

At the same time, Governor Kibwana lost the senatorial race to outgoing Makueni Member of Parliament Daniel Maanzo who garnered 177, 273 votes under a Wiper Party ticket.

The two-term governor garnered 59,034 votes under his Chama Cha Uzalendo Party, while Patrick Mbau of Nark Kenya came in third after receiving 36,676 votes.
