Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has spoken
about why he forgoes eating white meat delicacies such as chicken, fish, pig
and mutton meat.
Museveni,
who is known for his controversial beliefs, opined that his food aversion to
chicken was because people who ingested the birds’ meat have a character of
instability.
Although
the Ugandan Head of State did not dig into details, he urged his countrymen to
respect each and every individual’s beliefs.
“Pig
is haram, fish is haram…I don’t eat chicken because when you eat chicken you
become unstable. Chicken is a bird. I don’t eat mutton, I don’t eat all those
things and so my list of haram is much longer,” he said.
“The
difference with us here, with the people of this area, is that whatever beliefs
I have, I don’t interfere with my neighbour if he has a different belief.”
Citing
local communities which steer clear of consuming chicken meat while still rearing
the birds, Museveni advised Ugandans not to infringe on another person’s
beliefs or try to control them.
“For
instance, although Banyankole were not eating chicken, they were keeping
chicken for traditional religious ceremonies. But when your Muganda friend came,
they were eating chicken so [they would tell them] you take this chicken and
eat it,” he stated.
“This is our
culture, you live and let live; you have your own way, but I don’t interfere
with your way of life, you don’t interfere with my way of life.”
