Murang’a Seal head coach Yusuf Chipo aims to build on the positive momentum gained when they held Gor Mahia to a 0-0 draw in the FKF Premier League last weekend, as the two sides prepare to clash in the FKF Cup semi-finals at Dandora Stadium on Sunday.

The draw saw Murang’a Seal boost their survival chances in the league, and Chipo wants the team to take it a step further with a stronger performance in the rematch against K’Ogalo.

“In Sunday’s league match, we were outplayed in the second half, especially after they introduced Austin Odhiambo, who added a lot of attacking quality. Nevertheless, we created chances but failed to capitalize on them. Still, earning a point was better than nothing,” said Chipo.

Chipu, who was appointed seven weeks ago to steer the team out of the danger zone, says they have carefully analysed their previous encounter with the record league champions and developed a game plan for the crucial semi-final.

“We’ve gone back to the drawing board, identified our weaknesses and their strengths, and agreed on our approach. If everything goes according to plan, we have a real chance of making it to the final,” he added.

Chipo is however fearing that playing at Dandora Stadium could pose a challenge due to the artificial turf, which differs from their usual natural grass pitch.

“It will be a different kind of match compared to last weekend. We’re used to playing on natural grass, and adapting to an artificial surface might be tough, but I believe the boys will cope and rise to the occasion,” he noted.

Despite their struggles in the league, Murang’a SEAL have impressed in the FKF Cup, having eliminated top-flight sides Bidco United and Ulinzi Stars in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively.

Under Chipo’s guidance, the team has shown signs of revival, collecting eight points from a possible 15, including two crucial wins—ending a winless streak that had stretched to 12 matches.

While the threat of relegation from the toptier league still looms, the coach remains hopeful.

“We’re focused on the semifinal, but once that’s done, we’ll return home to prepare for our league match away in Awendo against Mara Sugar —a must-win fixture. After that, we host FC Talanta on the final day of the season.”

Murang’a SEAL currently lie 16th in the FKF Premier League standings with 33 points, holding a narrow one-point lead over Bidco United (17) and a two-point advantage over bottom-placed Nairobi City Stars (18), making every remaining fixture critical to their survival.
