Mudavadi: Goons will be dealt with as Kenya launches counter-terrorism hotline

“The security and peace of our nation remain non-negotiable even as we head to elections. The issue of gangs and goons will be dealt with,” Mudavadi said.

He urged Kenyans to take responsibility for security, saying the public has a role to play in identifying and reporting threats.

“Let us adhere to the calling that security begins with you,” he said.

Mudavadi spoke in Nairobi during the launch of a counter-terrorism reporting hotline and online reporting portal aimed at making it easier for members of the public to share information on suspected terrorist activities.

The hotline, 0800 900 900, is dedicated to counter-terrorism reporting.

Mudavadi said the initiative would enable communities to become partners in countering terrorism in different settings, including churches, mosques, public transport and during special events.

“This hotline launch elevates the community to serve as partners in countering terrorism anywhere: church, mosque, public transport and even during special events,” he said.

He urged Kenyans to make full use of the initiative, saying it would remove barriers to reporting intelligence, enhance community trust and contribute to public safety.

Mudavadi said the hotline was not a political initiative but a security measure intended to save lives.

“This line being launched is not a political initiative. It is a line that will save lives,” he said.

He said the initiative forms part of cooperation between Kenya, the United States and the United Kingdom in efforts to prevent terrorism and protect critical infrastructure and public spaces.

“We need to continue protecting critical structures and systems within public spaces while drawing on global best practices,” Mudavadi said.

US Deputy Ambassador Carla Benini said the initiative would give Kenyans an avenue to report suspected terrorist activity without fear of victimisation.

She said the United States would continue working with Kenya to strengthen security in East Africa, including through information and intelligence sharing.

UK Deputy High Commissioner Ed Barnett said the hotline and online portal would support direct reporting, investigations and timely interventions.

Major General Shane Morgan, commander of the Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa, urged members of the public to report suspicious activity.

“If you see something, you say something,” Morgan said.

He said continued cooperation was necessary to combat violent extremism and described the launch as an important initiative in those efforts.
