Mpox outbreak confirmed in Embu County as health officials intensify response

In a statement released on Saturday, Embu County Executive Committee Member for Health Jamal A. Runyenje announced that laboratory results received on May 30, 2026, confirmed a positive Mpox case involving a 29-year-old woman from Kagaari North Ward in Runyenjes Sub-County.

Following the confirmation, the Department of Health immediately activated emergency outbreak response measures aimed at containing the spread of the disease.

The interventions include case investigation, contact tracing, active case search, enhanced surveillance, risk communication, infection prevention and control, as well as community sensitization campaigns being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

Health officials noted that Mpox is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with an infected person, contaminated materials, respiratory secretions during prolonged exposure, or infected animals. Common symptoms include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, fatigue, and skin rashes or lesions.

Runyenje assured residents that all health facilities across Embu County have been placed on high alert, with preparedness measures strengthened to ensure rapid detection, isolation, and management of any suspected cases.

He further appealed to residents to observe preventive measures, including regular hand washing, avoiding close contact with suspected cases, refraining from sharing personal items, and cooperating with public health officers conducting surveillance and contact tracing exercises.

Residents experiencing symptoms such as fever, unusual skin rashes, lesions, or swollen lymph nodes have been advised to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.

“The County Government of Embu remains fully committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of our people. We shall continue providing timely updates as investigations and response activities progress,” said Runyenje.

The county government also urged members of the public to rely only on official government communication channels for accurate information regarding the outbreak.

Health authorities emphasised that early reporting and prompt medical attention remain critical in preventing further spread of the disease.
