Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has called for the impeachment of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen over the brutal shooting of two protestors at Ishiara during a demonstration.

The victims are among three people who died following protests over poor conditions at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital on April 14, 2026.

During a parliamentary session, MP Mukunji questioned why, in similar instances, police officers often use live ammunition against peaceful protestors exercising their Constitutional rights.

He noted that such incidents prove that CS Murkomen has failed in his duty.

"We've seen in my county, two young men died when they were fighting for healthcare systems in Ishiara Level 4 Hospital. They were shot by live bullets and their families were crying, Over ten bullets were collected by IPOA," the lawmaker noted.

He added that the House has the mandate to summon the Interior CS and impeach him for failure to crack the whip on errant officers.

"We've seen the use of officers against political rallies that are very calm, and the same officers are unable to protect cattle and our people in Baringo. We should have impeached the CS with immediate effect because he has failed in his duty. The CS should not be speaking when it comes to issues of insecurity," he pointed out.

The lawmaker, however, noted that such efforts could be futile due to the broad-based alignment in Parliament, which makes it difficult for anti-government proposals to advance.

"We already have a broad-based system in this House that has made it so hard to get members to support something that is against the government."

The legislator’s remarks come in the aftermath of post-mortem findings which showed that the two victims died from excessive bleeding caused by single gunshot wounds sustained during the protests in Ishiara.

The demonstrations were sparked by complaints over drug shortages, unreliable ambulance services and poor infrastructure at the facility, before escalating into chaos.

Witnesses said police opened fire while attempting to disperse the crowd, leading to the fatal shooting of two protesters. A third victim was seriously injured and later succumbed to the injuries in hospital.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched investigations into the incident to bring the perpetrators to book.
