Mombasa United have parted ways with head coach Gilbert
Selebwa following their weekend defeat to Kibera Black Stars in the National
Super League (NSL).
Despite the loss, Selebwa leaves with the club sitting
second on the log with 58 points, level with leaders Migori Youth, in a tightly
contested promotion race.
Club president Abdilrahman Hussein, popularly known as “Anza
Fresh,” confirmed the decision, saying it was mutually agreed upon and a
detailed statement would be released in due course.
“It’s true we have mutually agreed to part ways with the
coach. We will issue a full statement soon,” he said.
A termination letter signed by CEO Nick Arunga did not
specify the exact reasons for the exit, but cited sporting objectives and an
internal performance review as the basis for the decision, with immediate
effect.
Selebwa, however, said he was informed of his dismissal
during a Tuesday morning training session as the team prepared for their next
fixture against Soy United.
“It’s true, we were relieved of our duties after the loss
away to Kibera Black Stars. I gave everything to this club, lifting it from a
relegation battle to genuine title contenders,” Selebwa said.
“We brought a new energy to Mombasa, and the team was on
course for promotion. The progress speaks for itself,” he added.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Salim Babu, who has
recently been linked with the Harambee Stars U20 setup, could be in line to
take over.
In the meantime, the existing technical bench is expected to
oversee the team’s weekend clash at Mombasa Sports Club.
Mombasa United have enjoyed a strong campaign overall,
particularly at home where they remain unbeaten.
However, their away form has been inconsistent, with five wins, one draw, and eight losses from 14 matches.
