Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir on Monday led the groundbreaking of a new Level 4 hospital in Kongowea.

The governor, flanked by fellow governors Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and Simba Arati (Kisii), officially launched construction of the facility, which he announced will be named Raila Odinga Kongowea Hospital. This would be in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The Kongowea project follows the delivery of Level 3 hospitals in Mjambere (Kisauni) and Bofu (Likoni). The rollout of the facilities aims to decentralise care, ease congestion at the county’s main referral facility, and improve access for densely populated communities.

Speaking during the event, Nassir framed the project as part of a broader transformation agenda in the health sector to strengthen the healthcare system.

This, he said, includes investments in specialized services such as pediatric intensive care, oncology, and surgical capacity.

“This hospital is going to help thousands every year because it will be one of the biggest hospitals in the region after Coast General Hospital, and we target to build another three to make sure our people get quality and timely health services,” said the governor.

Kongowea, an area located in the rapidly growing Nyali constituency, has experienced increasing pressure on existing health services.

County officials also highlighted measures taken to relocate services during construction to avoid disruptions, signalling an emphasis on continuity of care.

On her part, Governor Wanga said it is the responsibility of leaders to ensure that citizens receive quality healthcare services that are accessible and close to them.

“We as a party and leaders have a responsibility to highlight development for our people, and that is what matters most, more than daily politics,” remarked Wanga.
