Media owners call for swift probe into abduction of Standard Group editor Alex Kiprotich

In a statement issued on Wednesday, MOA said it was concerned by the reported incident, while expressing relief that Kiprotich had been found safe.

The association stressed that journalists should not be abducted, threatened or interfered with while carrying out their professional duties.

MOA also called for clear institutional guarantees to strengthen the safety and protection of media practitioners in Kenya, saying journalists must be able to perform their work without fear.

The association further said it was ready to engage the government, security agencies and media industry stakeholders in structured discussions on the protection of journalists, while upholding responsible journalism and the Constitution. 

The call comes hours after the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) demanded accountability over Kiprotich's reported abduction, urging State agencies to swiftly identify and prosecute those behind the incident.

KEG President Zubeidah Kananu said attacks on journalists pose a serious threat to media freedom and the public's right to access information. She insisted that the safety of journalists must not depend on whether the government approves of their reporting. 

Kiprotich was reportedly abducted along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway before being found safe in the early hours of Wednesday. Standard Group Chief Executive Officer Chaacha Mwita said the journalist was located at around 6:30 am near Masinga Dam after allegedly being dumped by his captors. 

According to the Standard Group, Kiprotich sought refuge with a nearby family, which took him in and cared for him before he was located by a team from the media house led by Mwita. 

The  Guild has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to exercise its oversight mandate and ensure investigations and any subsequent prosecution are handled with the seriousness demanded by the circumstances.

The Guild is also seeking an independent investigation into the reported abduction, including circumstances surrounding an earlier incident on June 27. 

The latest calls by both the MOA and KEG place renewed focus on the safety of journalists in Kenya and the need for accountability whenever media practitioners are allegedly targeted in connection with their work.
