MKU clinches top university title at National Drama and Film Festivals

The institution delivered a dominant showing across multiple categories, including theatre, film, spoken word, dance, comedy, and verse, reinforcing its strong presence in the national creative arts space.
According to William Luta, Coordinator of Sports, Film and Creative Arts at MKU, the university maintained consistent top-level performance across the competition, building on its successes in 2024 and 2025.
MKU won top honours in cultural creative dance, solo verse, stand-up comedy, and the Kiswahili spoken word category. It also recorded strong placements, finishing second in play production, English spoken word, duet dance, narrative, and modern dance categories.
In film and documentary, the university secured second place in screen verse and third place in feature film production. Under the Equity Bank-sponsored documentary category, MKU finished third, earning a Sh30,000 award. The institution also received Sh100,000 for a top-ranking Equity Bank-sponsored play.
Several MKU students were individually recognised for outstanding performances across different categories.
Other notable performers at the festival included Kenyatta University, which won best play; the University of Nairobi, best narrative; the Cooperative University of Kenya, best mime; and Kibabii University, best modern dance.
The 64th edition of the Kenya National Drama and Film Festivals was held at Kagumo Teachers Training College, Nyeri National Polytechnic, and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology under the theme “Bold Storytellers’ Digital Stages: Driving Kenya’s Development through Theatre and Film.”
