Migori Youth face Gor Mahia test in Green Legacy Cup

The match has been organised by Zamzam Foundation Kenya, with funds raised expected to support edible farms, community farms and climate-smart agriculture projects across the country.

Zamzam Foundation County Director Abdullahi Shakir said the initiative will use football to support communities affected by food insecurity and climate change.

“This is a proposed national charity football match between Gor Mahia and Migori Youth. It is aimed at mobilising resources to promote food security, environmental conservation and community resilience across Kenya,” said Shakir.

Gor Mahia Vice Chairperson Sally Bolo said the club accepted the invitation because of its responsibility to give back to the community.

“Gor Mahia, accepted the invitation from Zamzam to participate in the friendly match and as a community club, we chose to partner with Zamzam Foundation to give back to the community,” said Bolo.

The match will also give Gor Mahia an opportunity to continue their preparations for the new season after their CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign.

Gor Mahia Secretary General Nick Arum said the fixture will be important as the club prepares for its upcoming assignments.

“This particular match is going a long way to help us prepare for the coming matches, more particularly now that we are not so sure when the Premier League is starting,” said Arum.

For Migori Youth, the match comes as the club prepares for its first season in the FKF Premier League following promotion from the National Super League.

Migori Youth Media and Communication Officer James Muema said the team will approach the game with confidence despite its limited experience at the top level.

“We are a young team, but we do not lack ambition. We will step onto that pitch carrying the hunger of a team that knows that it is still writing its story,” said Muema.

Muema added that the club is still strengthening its squad ahead of the new season.

“The team is in camp and we are already preparing ourselves for our very first season in the Premier League,” he said.

The organisers are also hoping to make the Green Legacy Cup an annual fixture.

Shakir said the foundation wants the match to become a curtain-raiser to the new football season, bringing together football and community development.

The game will also have regular tickets going for Ksh300, VIP tickets at Ksh2,000 and VVIP tickets at KSh5,000.

Organisers have promised enhanced security, with regular police officers, GSU, and stewards expected to be deployed.

Both teams have urged fans to turn up in large numbers and support the Green Legacy initiative while watching the two sides battle it out.
