Migori residents seek intervention as hyenas attack livestock

The residents say the hyenas have become a threat to their livelihoods after establishing a habitat in the sugarcane farms owned by Sony Sugar Company.

Calvince Odero, one of the affected residents, on Friday said he has lost several sheep to hyena attacks over the past two weeks.

Odero called on the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene, urging the agency to either relocate the hyenas to game reserves or take measures to prevent them from attacking livestock.

The concerns were echoed by residents Ongoro Amara and Samwel Opiyo, who said the attacks were affecting families that depend on livestock rearing for their livelihoods.

Opiyo said many residents have invested in livestock because the animals provide income for household needs, including payment of school fees and other financial obligations.

He called for urgent intervention to protect their livestock from further attacks.

Ongoro said residents have been forced to spend much of the night trying to scare away hyenas that venture into their homes and livestock enclosures.

He urged the government to intervene and address the situation before residents suffer further losses.
