A police officer
attached to Awendo sub-county has been stabbed to death while attempting to
arrest a murder suspect in North Sakwa Ward, Migori County.
Awendo sub-county
Police Commander Julius Kemboi said the officer was part of a team that had
been dispatched to arrest the suspect after receiving intelligence that he had
returned home from hiding.
According to
Kemboi, the suspect attacked the officers during the operation, fatally
stabbing one of them. The officer later succumbed to his injuries, and his body
has been moved to the Rosewood Hospital mortuary.
The suspect was
subsequently lynched by an angry mob following the attack. His body has been
taken to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a
post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
Kemboi said the
suspect had been wanted in connection with a murder committed in the area last
year and had reportedly been on the run before resurfacing.
The family of the
slain officer has described his death as a devastating loss. His father, John Nyagisoa,
said his son died in the line of duty and expressed hope that the government
would support the family in giving him a befitting burial.
Police have
launched investigations into both the fatal stabbing of the officer and the mob
lynching of the suspect.
