The Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital has disposed 153 unclaimed bodies at the facility’s graveyard after its mortuary reportedly ran out of preservation capacity.

The hospital’s health officer Misheck Nyingi, speaking to Citizen Digital after the disposal which kicked off early Saturday morning, said the bodies comprised of 111 children and 42 adults.

According to Mr. Nyingi, a majority of the bodies were taken to the hospital's morgue by police, and they were forced to dispose them after obtaining green light from the court.

He added that the hospital’s mortuary still remains with a further 165 unclaimed bodies, 40 of which they will be seeking a court order to also dispose next week.

The health officer stated that the hospital is developing a policy whereby they shall work with all Ward administrators, Chiefs, and relevant security personnel to ensure that the identities of bodies brought in by police in the near future are established to avert overloading the morgue again.
