Officers attached to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) have apprehended a duo linked to an illegal electricity connection network in Igembe North and South, Meru County.

Japhet Kirimi, aka Senator, and his accomplice, Ibrahim Gituma were apprehended after the officers discovered an extensive underground electricity network.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that the network powered over 21 unauthorized borehole pumps, providing water to numerous miraa farms in Mpinda village and the surrounding areas of Kabuitu, Kanyakine, Muthucine, and Mangala, none of which were metered.

DCI added that the illegal network has led to the failure of approximately 14 transformers, forcing costly replacements estimated at Ksh21 million.

"In addition, the revenue lost through the illegal supply of power to the 21 boreholes over the last four years is valued at approximately Ksh.90.7 million," DCI added.

The duo now awaits arraignment as they remain in police custody.
