The memorial service of the six Mbihi Girls' School students who died in a road accident in Naivasha took place on Wednesday at the school in Vihiga.

The sombre service was attended by parents and teachers as mourners eulogised the departed students.

The students closed school on April 18, when their colleagues were involved in a grisly accident on their way to Nairobi.

“It is unfortunate that I did not even get to inform the parents that their children had been involved in an accident. They had already learned about it from the media. It was a difficult moment,” said the headmaster of the school, Jael Lusamukha.

The Mbihi students were part of a larger group in an 11-seater public service vehicle headed from Nakuru to Nairobi.

Reports indicated that the matatu driver reportedly collided with an oncoming lorry headed in the opposite direction as he tried to overtake along the stretch between Naivasha and Delamere on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

The matatu driver then lost control and the vehicle rolled.
