Mbagathi Hospital performs first Laparoscopic surgery

The procedure was carried out on a patient suffering from symptomatic gallstones, a condition that had been causing severe pain. The minimally invasive operation was completed successfully, with the patient expected to be discharged within a day and resume normal activities sooner than would typically be possible after conventional open surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery involves making small incisions through which specialised instruments and a camera are inserted to perform the operation. Compared to traditional open surgery, the technique generally results in less pain, reduced risk of complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.

According to the hospital, the procedure, which would ordinarily cost about KSh212,000, was fully covered under the Social Health Authority (SHA), sparing the patient any out-of-pocket expenses.

The introduction of laparoscopic surgery is expected to expand access to minimally invasive procedures at the county referral hospital and improve surgical care for patients requiring such interventions.

County officials said the investment in the equipment forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise public health facilities and strengthen specialised healthcare services within Nairobi.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Alex Irungu, Medical Superintendent Dr Ericah Koima and Head of Clinical Services Dr Beatrice Mwangi were present during the procedure.

The operation was led by Dr Bharga, assisted by Dr Otieno, Dr. Obara, Dr. Maturi and Dr. Lumire, while the nursing team was led by Ariba.
