The two arch-rivals face in a seismic showdown at the top of the Kenya Premier League, with Gor nursing a three-point lead over second-placed Leopards, who target a first top flight title since 1998.
Gor Mahia have spluttered in recent weeks, losing 1-0 against Tusker and a barren draw against Bandari on Sunday, a result that has left the club’s chairman Ambrose Rachier fuming following a controversial moment during the match, where a penalty initially awarded to K’Ogalo was later overturned.
The leaders failed to capitalise on Leopards’ falter after Ingwe had crashed to a damaging 3-0 loss against holders Kenya Police the previous day.
“AFC Leopards have been playing well this season despite the loss against Police FC. I believe they still have what it takes to win the derby which might also decide the winner of the league this season,” said Mayoyo.
Mayoyo also praised Leopards’ leadership, led by chairman Boniface Ambani and head coach Fred Ambani for instilling the winning spirit in the playing unit.
In the "title-defining" clash, Leopards will be aiming to complete a season double over K’Ogalo following a 1-0 win last December.
"The two brothers won the league for the team in 1998; they know what it takes to win. I’m sure they have injected that spirit into the team.”
With Term Two school games set to begin when schools reopen next week, Mayoyo said his football team had taken a lot of inspiration from the hockey side that won the national title in Kisumu.
“Our hockey team has really inspired us ahead of the competition next term. I believe we have a good team that will win us the football title next term.”
