Mashujaa Day preparations gather pace as Gov't says Kipchoge Keino Stadium 68% complete

Preparations for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations have entered a critical phase, with the government saying the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret is now 68 per cent complete ahead of the October 20 national event.

The celebrations will be hosted across Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties for the first time, with activities scheduled to run from October 13 to 18 under the theme ‘Security, Sports and the Finance Sector (The Economy).’

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo said the main celebrations will be held at Kipchoge Keino Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 15,043.

Kapsabet Stadium, which can accommodate 10,000 people, is 45.4 per cent complete, while Kamariny Stadium in Iten, also with a 10,000-seat capacity, is 58 per cent complete.

PS Omollo said additional works were ongoing to improve roads in Eldoret City, Kapsabet and Iten, alongside efforts to enhance water connectivity and other infrastructure in the three counties.

The stadium works are being undertaken by the Ministry of Sports, with support and supervision from the Ministry of Defence.

“As Chair of the Steering Committee, I am confident that we will be ready for the celebrations. There is still considerable work to be done,” PS Omollo said, while commending the technical teams involved in the preparations.

He also praised the county governments of Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi and Uasin Gishu, as well as county and national leaders, for supporting the decision to spread the celebrations across the three counties.

The PS urged residents to prepare to welcome Kenyans from across the country and visiting dignitaries who will join President William Ruto for the celebrations.

He said the event would offer the region an opportunity to showcase its contribution to sports, security and the economy.

Omollo also addressed recent incidents of banditry and cattle rustling, saying the government had made progress through a multi-agency approach.

He said security teams were working with leaders in Samburu, Isiolo and parts of Meru to address the situation, urging residents in affected areas to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
