Mary Macharia's award-winning journey from Kenya to global influence

The Kenyan multi-hyphenate juggles roles as a newborn specialist, brand ambassador, and community leader in Houston, having built her career from scratch.
After starting as a brand promoter in Nairobi, she survived the strict culture of Qatar's hospitality scene before relocating to America in 2017 to settle with her family.
Mary is refreshingly honest about the "diaspora struggle" – the exhausting grind of balancing work, motherhood, and the loneliness of life abroad. Yet she has turned that fight into fuel, driving growth for major brands like Taptap Send and Ambia App while caring for newborns by night. Her secret lies in structure and empathy, believing that safety and emotional well-being are non-negotiable for every child in her care.
Her excellence has not gone unnoticed – Mary has been crowned Diaspora Influencer of the Year multiple times, earning numerous awards that recognize her outstanding impact in connecting brands with African audiences worldwide. These accolades celebrate her ability to authentically engage communities and drive meaningful conversations across the diaspora.
A proud pillar of Houston's Kenyan community, Mary leads her church choir and supports charity projects in both the US and Kenya. Her message to fellow Kenyans is short and powerful: believe in yourself, stay focused, network, and give back. From Dandora's dusty fields to American success, her story proves that resilience and community can take you anywhere.
True to her role as a connector and community builder, Mary is currently lending her influence to an exciting diaspora gathering – the eighth edition of "Where There's Smoke," set to take place in Dubai on the 7th of November 2026.
The event is designed to bring Kenyans and other diaspora communities together for an unforgettable experience, and Mary has been instrumental in spreading the word.
To make participation seamless, free transport has been arranged from several locations across the UAE, with pickups scheduled for 7 PM in Dubai at Deira City Center, Sharjah Sahara Center on the Dubai side, and Mall of Emirates near Lulu Hypermarket, alongside a 6 PM pickup in Abu Dhabi at Al Wahda Mall and another 6 PM pickup in Al Ain behind Al Ain Mall.
All transport will return promptly at 10 AM the following morning, ensuring attendees can fully enjoy the event without worry. This initiative reflects Mary's ongoing commitment to fostering unity, creating opportunities for connection, and uplifting the diaspora through experiences that celebrate shared culture and community spirit.
