United Green Movement (UGM) leader and presidential hopeful David Maraga has accused the government of failing to curb what he described as a growing “goon culture” in the political space ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking in Bomet County during his Ukatiba Caravan tour on Monday, the former Chief Justice warned that continued political violence and disruptions could threaten the country’s stability.

“If we continue like this, we will have a failed state. This is how countries like Haiti got into problems that they are in… if we see something like this and we keep quiet we will lose the country,” Maraga said.

Maraga also demanded the resignation of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, saying the security docket was too critical to be associated with allegations of hiring goons.

“And we are demanding that Mr Omollo should resign. He should not wait but he should resign, and if he doesn’t resign, we are asking the President to sack him,” he said.

“You can’t have a ministry very critical providing security with its PS being the one hiring goons,” he added.

The UGM leader urged young people to register as voters in large numbers and take part in shaping the country’s leadership in 2027.

“The numbers are not very good… so we are urging the young people to please register… next year is a crucial vote… and nobody should be left behind,” Maraga said.

His remarks come as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) renewed an appeal to young Kenyans to collect their national identity cards and register as voters.

IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu, speaking in Nyeri County, said more than 400,000 ID cards remained uncollected at registration offices, warning that those without IDs cannot register as voters.

“It’s a very big concern… once you have not collected your ID, it means then you cannot register. It is the primary document which you use to register,” Nderitu said, noting that the IDs are ready for collection with about two weeks remaining before the end of the enhanced continuous voter registration exercise.
