A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by an Eldoret court after being found guilty of defiling and infecting his 10-year-old niece with HIV.

The suspect was accused of defiling the child on unknown dates in September 2023 in Chemoru village, Uasin Gishu County.

While delivering the verdict, Eldoret Senior Principal Magistrate Daniel Sitati stated that three witnesses, including a medical report from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), proved that the suspect committed the offense.

In his defense, the suspect told the court that he had been framed by the child's family, claiming they had a disagreement with her father over a land dispute.

However, the court dismissed those claims, stating there was sufficient evidence to prove the suspect committed the act.

He was granted 14 days to appeal the sentence.
