Mama Ngina Girls’ High School in Mvita, Mombasa County has been closed over attempts by students to burn down one of the school buildings on Tuesday night.

According to Mombasa County Director of Education Peter Magiri, the school administration took the decision on Wednesday to contain student unrest at the school.

“We have released the students to go home after attempting to burn down a store. We have weighed and seen that it is good to let them go home for some time,” said Magiri.

“We are not saying when they are coming back because the school board has to make a decision.”

The school administration directed all students to go home, adding that there were no injuries or cases of vandalism recorded.

“There is no damage that has been caused because at the store that they wanted to burn, the fire was noticed and put out very fast,” added Magiri.

Some parents who arrived at the school on Wednesday to pick their daughters decried what they termed as failure by the school administration to inform them of the occurrence.

“It is said that something can happen in the school and the parents are not informed, we should have been updated on what really happened,” Hassan Hamadi, a parent at the school, said.

They further claimed that they were denied entry into the premises.
