Leopards are among the four teams set to participate in the inaugural Elijah
Lidonde memorial cup.
The
July 9-10 tournament will be held at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega as a way of
remembering the fallen Leopards legends, and Kakamega Homeboyz, Nzoia Sugar,
and Vihiga Bullets alongside the big cats are set to participate.
AFC
Leopards boss Dan Shkanda said that the tourney will also act as part of their
pre-season preparations.
“We
want to first of all put structures in place beginning from this tournament
going forward so that we can use such tournaments to; commemorate our fallen
legends, secondly to enable the team start early preparations (ahead of the new
FKF Premier League season) and thirdly to make sure that we tap talents from
Western which is rich in good players who can improve the team,” Shikanda said.
The
four teams will know their semifinal opponents after the July 8 draw. The
winners will take home a trophy and Sh1million.
In
the meantime Shikanda has called upon Ingwe fans to be patient as his office
continues to put in place structures to build a stronger team for the future.
“We
want to make sure that the foundation is strong so we don’t do things in a
trial and error method which I think many teams here in Kenya are depending on to
win titles. We as Leopards would not want to take that direction,” Shikanda
concluded.
