Laurian headlines record-breaking Anza MMA Contenders 8 in Nairobi

East Africa's rapidly growing mixed martial arts scene reached another milestone on Thursday night as ANZA MMA Contenders 8 drew a soldout crowd to The Alchemist in Nairobi, delivering the promotion's biggest amateur event to date.

The eighth edition of the Contenders series attracted a record number of fans, underscoring the increasing popularity of MMA across the region and ANZA MMA's emergence as the leading platform for developing amateur talent in East Africa.

The event brought together fighters from Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan in a showcase of the region's rising stars, with athletes producing a series of explosive finishes and dominant performances throughout the night.

The headline bout saw Nairobi Jiu-Jitsu Academy's Samuel Laurian cap off an impressive evening with a third-round technical knockout victory over Joshua Ojow, using relentless pressure and sharp striking to secure the win and cement his status as one of East Africa's most promising amateur fighters.

Several other athletes delivered standout performances in front of the packed venue. Norman Mondo extended his unbeaten amateur record with a submission victory over Musa Mugamba, while Hamza Fahim continued his impressive rise by earning a TKO win against Diing Chol.

Hassan Jaffar also thrilled spectators with one of the fastest finishes of the evening, submitting Elvis Okello with a first-round triangle choke.

Elsewhere on the card, Martin Chite defeated Simon Ladu via first round TKO, Dennis Nyingi outpointed Obonyo Sunday, Dickson Aomo scored a first round knockout against Evans Kabura, M'Marete Munene secured a decision victory over Hashim Musa, and Raymond Wenendeya stopped Shadrack Otieno in the second round.

The performances highlighted the growing depth and quality of amateur MMA talent emerging from gyms across the region.

The atmosphere inside the venue was further elevated by energetic commentary from Joe De Bestt and Alex Holi, while athletes representing clubs such as Nairobi Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Hardcore Gym Kayole, Kampala Grappling Club, Mombasa Sharks and Triple A Kickboxing Club from Juba demonstrated the continued development of the sport across East Africa.

The event also marked the debut of CHEZA CHEZA as ANZA MMA's main partner, a move expected to strengthen grassroots development and provide additional support for emerging fighters.

ANZA MMA founder Peng Chen praised the athletes, coaches, fans and partners for helping make the event a success, noting that the record attendance reflects the growing appetite for mixed martial arts in the region.

Since its inception, the ANZA MMA Contenders series has established itself as East Africa's premier amateur MMA platform, creating a pathway for young fighters to progress to the professional ranks.
