In a largely balanced encounter, with both sides showing discipline and organisation throughout, chances were few and far between, as each team struggled to create clear scoring opportunities despite positive spells of play.
Kakamega Homeboyz held their own against the league leaders, matching Gor Mahia in intensity and structure. They remained compact defensively and looked composed on the ball, ensuring that Gor Mahia found it difficult to penetrate their backline for most of the match.
Gor Mahia, on the other hand, controlled periods of possession and showed intent going forward, but were equally limited in the final third. Their attacking efforts were often contained by the Homeboyz defence, resulting in a cagey affair with minimal goalmouth action.
With the match seemingly headed for a draw, a late twist decided the outcome. In the 90+3 minute, pressure from Gor Mahia after a cross by Ebenezer Assifuah forced an error in the Kakamega Homeboyz defence, leading to an own goal by Homeboyz player Peter Ng'ang'a Thuong'o that handed the visitors the lead.
The late goal proved decisive, as Gor Mahia held on through the final moments to secure all three points.
