The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed the outbreak of a fire at Lake Nakuru National Park that spread from a nearby residential area, briefly threatening parts of the protected ecosystem before being contained after a multi-agency response.

According to KWS, the fire broke out at about 4pm on Friday after flames originating from Lake View Estate spread into the park, affecting the Honeymoon Hill area.

The blaze was contained by 10pm following a coordinated operation involving KWS rangers, the City Fire Team, Bondeni Police, and members of the local community.

No injuries or fatalities were reported, and no wildlife casualties have been confirmed.

KWS warned that dry weather conditions, strong winds and dry vegetation significantly increase the risk of wildfires.

"The public is cautioned against lighting fires during the dry season, as strong winds and dry vegetation can cause fires to spread rapidly, posing serious risks to human life, wildlife, property and the environment. Such incidents destroy habitats, reduce grazing areas, and heighten human–wildlife conflict," said KWS.
