Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) were crowned Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men's league champions  for the first time on Saturday after spanking hapless Chema Volleyball Club in straight sets in a pulsating final staged at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

It was the first time the Mombasa-based side won the league title and they did it in an epic fashion, completing a double against the newbies after thumping them 3-2 in the first match of the best-of-three series final on Friday.

The newly crowned champions showed intent from the onset, spiking back to back before Chema replied. However, they continued their powerful attacks to lead 12-7, prompting Chema's head coach Jeremiah Mukopi to call for a timeout.

However, KPA continued their dominance, once again mounting powerful attacks and blocks to lead 17-12, prompting Mukopi to call for a second timeout.

Little changed after the short break with KPA holding them off to win 25-21.

The second and third sets proved similar as the Dockers brushed Chema off 25-20 and 25-21 respectively to ascend to the title.

For KPA, they turned up at the right time and everything worked for them, contrary to Chema’s game plan.

KPA's head coach James Ontere was over the moon following the emphatic victory.

"We are really glad to win the title. It is our first time to clinch the title and everything worked according to the plan. Our attack and defence were on point and that gave us the win," said Ontere.

The former attacker added that they will shift their focus to the Kenya Cup as they look for a double swoop this season.

Mukopi, on the other hand,  conceded the defeat, blaming poor reception and service.

"The approach to the game was wrong and we could not contain the pressure. Our reception and service were not good but we have learned our lesson the hard way and we look forward to building from that loss."

The experienced tactician was however glad after having a fantastic season which saw them finish second in their maiden season in the top flight.

Attention now shifts to the Kenya Cup where the ever improving Chema will be eyeing the title.

The triumph meant KPA walked home with Ksh 300,000 shillings and a trophy, while Chema bagged 200,000 shillings for being the first runner-up. Kenya Prisons bagged the bronze medal after edging Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 3-2 in a five set thriller taking home Ksh100,000.
