Athletics Kenya Nairobi branch chairman Barnaba Korir says they are planning to take more that 50 athletes to the upcoming World Athletics Championship set for Tokyo Japan.
Speaking ahead of
the National Trials, set to begin Tuesday at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Korir
said the number could rise if more athletes qualify for the competition.
“We are planning to take more than 52 athletes
to the championship but that number could rise to 64 if everyone qualifies, we
know we have the talent in Kenya and the trials are going to be very
competitive,” he said. “I can assure you on that. It is the why they call it a
mini world championship.”
Korir has at the
same time thanked the government for their support.
“We almost missed
out on hosting the Kip Keino Classic this year but the ministry came through
and helped us host the competition, and if you see the complex it is extremely
massive to host athletics event there,” he said. “We are hoping even tomorrow’s
[Tuesday] trials will be amazing to watch.”
Korir has at the same time challenged corporates to come on board and use the athletes as their brand ambassadors, to help improve their livelihoods.
