Kenya National Bureau of Standards (KNBS) has formed a committee to explore ways into which the government can harness data sourced directly from communities.

The Technical Working Committee on Citizen-Generated Data (CGD) will look into ways the data which is collected by civil societies and Non-Governmental Organisations can be utilized by KNBS for official reporting and planning by the government

"By actively involving our citizens in the data-generation process, we can capture a more comprehensive and nuanced picture of their needs, aspirations, and challenges. It is through this collaborative approach that we can truly address the existing data gaps and develop strategies that resonate with the realities of our communities,’’ said KNBS Director Benjamin Avusevwa.

"Some of the indicators that may not have been collected may be collected by these civil society organisations and we may be able to use that information. The information is first validated to ensure it is fit for official reporting," Avisevwa said.

Open Institute Executive Director Al Kags has noted that some of the citizen-generated data can be utilized by both national and county governments in implementing the development agenda

"Data produced by citizens on the ground can add value to that collected by KNBS. It can be used by counties to woe investors," said Al Kags said.

Muthoni Mugo from the Global Partnership Sunsustainable Development Data says the move is set to bridge data gaps

‘’Different organizations have been working on silos. The data gaps will now be filled for development. Now data collected from citizens can be put into use and collaborated with the government to address gaps in citizen needs

The committee includes representatives from KNBS, relevant state ministries and development partners.
