KNBL: Thunder one win away from title defence

Defending champions Nairobi City Thunder moved to within one victory of retaining their National Men’s Basketball Premier League title after taking a commanding 2-0 lead over Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in the best-of-five final series.

Thunder followed up their 78-67 Game One victory on Saturday with a 73-63 win over KPA in Game Two at Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa on Sunday. The result leaves Thunder one victory away from completing a third consecutive league title.

Thunder made a strong start, taking the opening quarter 22-14 before KPA responded with a 21-17 second-quarter advantage. The champions, however, maintained a 39-35 lead at halftime.

KPA continued their fight after the break, edging the third quarter 17-12 to take a 52-51 lead into the final period.

The game remained closely contested in the fourth quarter, with the teams twice tied at 56-56 and 60-60. Thunder then pulled away in the closing stages to seal a 73-63 victory.

Derrick Ogechi and captain Tylor Ongwae led Thunder with 20 points apiece, while Eugene Adera added 11. For KPA, Trevor Opiyo top-scored with 13 points, followed by Tobias Odhiambo with 11 and Cedrick Tsangue with 10.

Ogechi proved decisive in the closing stages after returning to the court following an eye injury. With Thunder leading 67-63, he scored six straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers, to put the game beyond KPA’s reach.

Thunder will now return to Nairobi for Game Three on October 2, where they will have the opportunity to close out the series. Games Four and Five, if required, are yet to be confirmed.

Thunder are seeking a third consecutive league title and are also looking to extend an unbeaten run that stretches back to 2023.
