KMA warns of rough seas, strong winds along Kenyan Coast

The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has warned that heavy rains, rough seas and strong winds are expected along the Kenyan coast between September and December, with potentially hazardous conditions for people and vessels operating.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, KMA Director General Omae Nyarandi says the anticipated weather conditions could also bring high waves and reduced visibility, posing risks to fishermen, boat operators, passengers and coastal communities.

The authority has advised members of the public to avoid venturing into the sea during periods of adverse weather and to postpone non-essential activities when conditions deteriorate.

"The conditions may include strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility, which pose a risk to vessels and persons undertaking activities at sea and along the coastline," stated Mr. Nyarandi.

Boat owners and operators have also been urged to properly secure their vessels, whether underway, moored or at anchor, while passengers and crew have been reminded to wear life jackets while on board.

Fisherfolk and other maritime users have further been advised to monitor weather updates and seek safe shelter where necessary.

Vessels already at sea have been cautioned to remain vigilant and proceed to safe shelter if conditions worsen.

KMA has also urged coastal communities to remain alert to strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall, while following instructions issued by relevant authorities.

The authority now wants members of the public to continuously monitor official weather and maritime safety updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department and KMA.

The warning comes as the country prepares for the September-December period, during which Met has already predicted adverse weather conditions brought about by El Niño rains.
