Baby Pendo Botanical Park is a public recreational area in remembrance of the 6-month-old Baby who died in the hands of police in Nyalenda, Kisumu.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the park, which was formerly the Kachok dumpsite, has transformed into a recreational facility.
Nyong’o noted that 10 years ago, the place was choking in filth and it was not somewhere a parent would bring their children to relax.
According to the governor, the works at the park are a sign that the city of Kisumu is keen on creating environments where members of the public and families can relax.
Speaking in Kisumu, Nyongo said the park will now remain as a reminder of the unfortunate events that led to the death of the minor, who is a heroine to Kisumu and the nation.
While unveiling the park, Governor Nyong'o shared memories of the fateful day in Nyalenda, when Baby Pendo was killed.
"Mama and Baba Pendo have come here today, reminding us of the violence that followed the 2017 election, and that saw an innocent six-month-old baby leave this earth because a policeman had shot her. And that was there, Mama Pendo will tell you, when I arrived at that house and saw her baby. She was breastfeeding in her arms. It's not a sight that you want to remember," said Nyong'o.
